Radon test kits
EPA describes two types of tests: short-term (2–90 days, often charcoal canisters) and long-term (more than 90 days; more likely to reflect your year-round average). Source: EPA A Citizen’s Guide to Radon.
Many state radon programs offer free or discounted kits. Check yours via EPA’s state program list.
What to look for in a radon test
- Short-term kits (2–7 days) give a quick first reading; good for screening or real-estate timelines.
- Long-term kits (90+ days) better reflect your year-round average, since radon swings with weather and season.
- Continuous digital monitors show ongoing readings and are handy for checking a mitigation system over time.
- Choose a kit analyzed by a certified lab (look for NRPP or NRSB listing) with lab fees and return postage stated up front.
- Follow the instructions exactly: lowest lived-in level, closed-house conditions, correct exposure time, and mail it back promptly.
- After mitigation, retest to confirm levels dropped.
