Is Radon Dangerous?
Yes. Breathing radon over time raises your risk of lung cancer. EPA estimates radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths a year in the US, and the Surgeon General calls it the second leading cause of lung cancer. EPA says fix your home at 4 pCi/L or higher and consider fixing between 2 and 4.
EPA says there is no known safe level of radon, and smokers exposed to radon face a much higher risk. The Minnesota Department of Health calls radon the number one cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.
The risk can be lowered by reducing the radon level in your home. See does mitigation work?
